It was touch and go over the weekend but in the end the weather played its part and we were left to celebrate becoming the first two time winners of the Hedley Howarth trophy as Auckland 2 day Premier Champions.
"Last season we caught everyone by surprise when we just got into the top six" said Coach Fletch. "This time no one took us lightly, without Paul Hitchcock who retired at the end of last season, it was tough - but in the end we got home"
And we did get home - just - by 1.12 points.
Fletch says "While Ryan Scivier (captain) was not our top performer he has grown as a captain and is well respected by the players. Our success has been based on both our batting and bowling. Craig and Brad Cachopa have been the key with the bat while James Cowell has been the unsung hero with the ball. He has taken 51 wickets , which I think is top in the competition"
Captain Scivier said the triumph was "very satisfying" even if a little nerve wracking. As a warning to other teams Scivier said that as far as he was aware all the players will be back next season.
Three in a row for the lads?? "Why not?" said Fletch. It would be a brave man to bet against this champion side!
Not to be outdone our Premier Reserve side also grabbed the title, having largely sewen it up going into the final round. The club bids farewell to an outstanding and loyal servant in the form of Scott MacKenzie who is hanging up his boots after a long career. Scott belted 102 last weekend in his final innings - a fitting way to go out for this trail blazer. Well led by big Simon Mathewson it was a superb way to cap off an outstanding season for the senior mens club.
Well done to all the players and coaching staff. It is a historic achievement defending the Hedley Howarth trophy and one that you can all be extremely proud of.
