Takapuna made the most of their trip over the bridge as they pummeled the Parnell attack in wracking up 334 on the first day and then proceeded to reduce the home side to 27/5. The Takapuna batting order fired all the way down with significant contributions from no less than five players and including two fifties to Steve Pearson (62) and Josh Stuart (56). Parnell’s attack centered entirely around two men who picked up nine of the ten wickets: James Walsh (5/91) and Chas Keogh (4/80). However if Parnell were looking up at a mountain before they went out to bat they were underground by the end of the day as Greg Johnson (4/5) tore through their top order to leave them needing another 308 runs with only five wickets in hand on day two to grab first innings points.
